CIVIL WAR LASTS - Last Cambria County Civil War Veterans (April 1936), Last Survivors in the U.S. & Pension paid in Three Different Centuries

As of April 1936 (Johnstown Democrat) the last five remaining living Civil War veterans of Johnstown were John Woy, H.H. Hoffman, Silas Plummer. John Messanger and Josiah Miller. Bottom clipping is from 1953 (Johnstown Tribune) The passing of such men as John Way, left, and Silas Plummer (last native Cambria County veteran who died in 1940) , right, marked the end of the Grand Army of the Republic in Johnstown. Mr. Woy was the last commander of Emory Fisher Post, GAR,and Mr. Plummer's death in 1940 erased the last name from the local ranks of Civil War Veterans. At its peak the post boosted an active membership of some 300. But here is where things get a bit murky. Depending on what source material you use. I am using and sticking with old newspaper clippings I have in my collection. "DONT DO THAT UNTIL I AM DEAD" -- On the day of the meeting of the secessionists at Kingston, Georgia, a Rev. War Soldier returned to his residence in Cobb County, on the railroad, though his eyes were so dim he could not see well. He was told they were trying to dissolve,or secede from the Union. Whereupon he dropped his withered face, and seemed to be in deep distress for one or two minutes, after which he raised his head, and, with a faltering voice, said, "Oh don't do that till I am dead!" while he uttered these words the large tears chased each other down his worn cheeks. He was told a great number of men would try to prevent them; to which he replied, "Don't let them do that till I am dead!" The Troubles of Secession Men in a passion cannot reason, says the Pittsburg Journal, hence the wild conclusions of the leaders of the south.--Their appeals to the followers were not the dictates of reason and common sense, but the wildest rhapsodies of pa...

April 12 to April 25, 1861 - We have a Civil War on our Hands - War Fever Hits Area - Local Units - Cambria Guards - Local Members - Alleghenian

We have a Civil Wat on our hands---there is no use in looking away from the fact. For this year, the chief business of the American people must be proving that they have a government, and that Freedom is not another name for Anarchy. A civil war has actually commenced between the sections of this once glorious Union. The heart of every patriot bleeds at this solemn truth. The true men of the country have now a great duty to perform. The preliminaries are over--revolution has taken arms and proceeded to the last extremity--and now every man who reveres the memory of Washington must use his efforts and devote his wealth, his personal services, and his life, if necessary, in defending the integrity of the Government which the patriots of the revolution handed down as a PERPETUAL BLESSING to their posterity. LITTLE CAMBRIA IN MOTION---THE VOICE OF HER PEOPLE. On Wednesday evening, an impromptu public meeting of the citizens of Ebensburg and vicinity was held at the Court House, ...
